School Council Student Nominations

Are you a student at our College and would like to participate in our School Council? Please submit your enquiry to College Business Manager Dee Hosking dhosking@wmyc.vic.edu.au by Tuesday 24th February 2026.

What is a school council and what does it do?

All government schools in Victoria have a school council. They are legally constituted bodies that are given powers to set the broad direction of a school, in accordance with Ministerial Order 1280 Constitution of Government School Councils, and the Education and Training Reform Act 2006. In doing this, a school council is able to directly influence the quality of education that the school provides for its students.

Who is on the school council?

For most primary school councils, there are several possible categories of membership:

A mandated elected parent member category – more than one-third of the total members must be from this category. Department employees can be parent members at their child’s school as long as they are not engaged in work at the school.

A mandated elected school employee member category – members of this category may make up no more than one-third of the total membership of school council. The principal of the school is automatically one of these members.

An optional community member category – members are co-opted by a decision of the council because of their special skills, interests or experiences. Department employees are not eligible to be community members.

A small number of school councils have nominee members.

For all schools with a Year 7 and above cohort, there is an additional category of membership:

A mandated elected student member category, two positions. Generally, the term of office for all members is two years. The term of office of half the members expires each year, creating vacancies for the annual school council elections.

Why is parent membership so important?

Parents on school councils provide important viewpoints and have valuable skills and a range of experiences and knowledge that can help inform and shape the direction of the school. Those parents who become active on a school council find their involvement satisfying and may also find that their children feel a greater sense of belonging.

Do I need special experience to be on school council?

Each member brings their own valuable life skills and knowledge to the role. However, councillors may need to develop skills and acquire knowledge in areas that are unfamiliar to them. It is important to have an interest in your child’s school and the desire to work in partnership with others to help shape the school’s future.

Dear Families,

This letter is to inform you of the upcoming NAPLAN assessment for student in Year 7 and 9, scheduled 11th-13th of March, with catchup testing scheduled for the following week.

At Wodonga Middle Years College, we are dedicated to preparing your child for these assessments and using them as one of many tools to understand and support each student’s learning journey. Recognising that while NAPLAN is an important assessment, it will be just one of the various resources we use to evaluate your child’s progress.

Please note that the timetable for your child’s participation in the NAPLAN tests will be provided closer to the testing window. This schedule will detail the specific dates and times for each test. In preparation for NAPLAN, students will be provided opportunities to familiarise themselves with the format of the assessments to ensure they are comfortable and confident in taking the test. As the NAPLAN are conducted online. We encourage all students to ensure they have organised their own approved device. Our notebook program is available to families at all times, and more information can be found at https://www.wmyc.vic.edu.au/our-college/ict. Device enquiries can be directed to the ICT Team on 02 6057 9004

Below you will find a parent fact sheet about NAPLAN, providing essential information about the tests, including their nature, what they assess, and how the results can be interpreted and use. For more information about these tests please visit the VCAA website at www.vcaa.vic.edu.au or the NAP website at www.nap.edu.au

We understand that NAPLAN testing can be challenging for students and families, and we will provide strategies and support to ensure all students can do their best in next week’s newsletter which was written by our college’s wellbeing team.

If you have concerns, please reach out to NAPLAN coordinators Andrea Wood (Feltimber) and Miranda O’Shea (Huon) to discuss that supports that can be put in place to support your child.

The NAPLAN timetable is available below. Please have a look at when your child has their NAPLAN test and help them to bring their device to school fully charged for each day of the testing as all NAPLAN tests are online. Students will need a calculator for the numeracy test and headphones for the Language Convention tests. We have some spare calculators and headphones should your child not have one.

Please note: All Year 8 students will have class as normal during the NAPLAN testing period.

Dear parents and carers,
I am writing to inform you of a cyber incident that has impacted some student data across all Victorian government schools.

What has been accessed
A Department of Education database with current and past student information was accessed by an external third-party.

The third-party accessed active and inactive past school student accounts, consisting of:

student name

DET-issued email address and encrypted password (for those that use them)

school name

year level

The third-party did not access other student data such as birth dates, home addresses or phone numbers.

Your child’s safety
The safety and wellbeing of students is our priority. The department has protections in place for student email accounts, however you may wish to remind your child not to respond to unexpected or unknown emails. If you have safety concerns about your child’s school location being known, please contact me and notify Victoria Police or The Orange Door as necessary.

What’s happened to the accessed data?
There is no evidence to suggest that the data accessed has been released publicly or shared with other third parties.

Steps we are taking
Wodonga Senior Secondary College and Wodonga Middle Years College operate on locally managed staff and student systems for authentication and email access. While we utilise some Department of Education systems for purposes such as software licensing, our students do not use departmental systems for day-to-day ICT access, file storage, or email services.

As a result, the impact of this incident on our local systems and student data is minimal. Our student management and learning management systems are operating normally, are correctly configured with 2026 student and class data, and remain accessible to both staff and students without interruption.

Notwithstanding this limited impact, we are fully following all recommendations provided by the Department of Education. These actions, including the reset of department-based student passwords, are being completed today. Our students will receive further instructions through their local Wodonga Senior Secondary College and Wodonga Middle Years College email accounts.

The department has identified the cause of this incident and has put protections in place. They will continue to provide me with updates as we enter the 2026 school year.

If you wish to speak with someone from the Department of Education about this, please call 1800 338 663.

As always we are ready to support your family in any way.

Kind regards,

Over the recent school holidays, Year 9 student Cooper Greenham-Peake had the unique opportunity to attend the Melbourne Theatre Company’s Young Artists Week, a selective program that invites only 20 students from across Victoria to immerse themselves in the world of theatre.

“I went down on Sunday, and we started on Monday and went right through to Friday,” Cooper said. “It was a lot of everything to do with theatre.”

Throughout the week, students worked closely with industry professionals, including a writer, a director, and a costume designer, exploring everything from script writing and creative development to costume sewing and performance creation. The program culminated in a group performance showcasing their work.

Despite feeling nervous at first, Cooper says the experience exceeded all expectations. “I didn’t really have many expectations going in, but it was definitely a lot more than I expected. It was such an amazing experience.”

Cooper has been involved in three productions during his time at Wodonga Middle Years, including Wodonga Senior Secondary College latest production, ‘Harry Potter & The Cursed Child’, and has a clear love for drama. “I’ve done the production for three years now, and I love being a part of it no matter what the role is. Even if I was tree number one, I’d be happy just being a part of it.” This year, that dedication paid off with Cooper landing a semi-major role of Amos Diggory in the aforementioned Harry Potter & The Cursed Child, an experience that’s only strengthened their enthusiasm for performing.

Reflecting on the Young Artists Week, Cooper offered some advice for other students who might get the chance to apply in the future. “Don’t be nervous. I spent the first two days just in the corner, all nervous, but everyone there was just like me, they all love performing arts. I got to the end of it and thought, that went so quick! I just wish I’d stepped out of my comfort zone sooner.”

With only 20 students selected from across Victoria, including Ava Beall from the Huon Campus and Demi O’Brien Harding from Wodonga Senior, this was a truly special opportunity and a testament to Cooper’s talent and commitment to the performing arts.
