10 Years of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF)

Indigenous Literacy Day – Youtube Live PremiereView Event

To watch the Premiere event simply visit the Indigenous Literacy Foundation Youtube channel at 12.30pm on Wednesday 2 September. This fast-paced, highly visual 45-minute celebratory event is designed to engage the nation in the value of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ first languages.

ILF Ambassadors, Jessica Mauboy will sing an Australian favourite and Anita Heiss, Andy Griffiths, Alison Lester, Shelley Ware and ILF co-Patron June Oscar AO will be joined by kids and community members – from Tiwi Islands and Jilkminggan in the Northern Territory and Bidyadanga in Western Australia – sharing delightful stories and the value of language.

If you can’t make the Premiere event don’t worry – it will stay on Youtube and you can watch it at any time.

Book Club Event – ‘The Yield’ by Tara June WinchRegister

Join the Bondi Literary Salon Book Club on Friday 4 September at 7pm via Zoom and discuss the award-winning book by Tara June Winch, ‘The Yield’. It is set to be a great Book Club event and funds raised on the night will be donated to Indigenous Literacy.

Southern Deadly Yarns: Anita Heiss – Online Author TalkRegister

Neporendi Aboriginal Forum Inc. and Onkaparinga Libraries presents Southern Deadly Yarns – a series of virtual author events highlighting the incredible work of First Nations authors. Join the event and examine topics including truth telling, recognition, and what makes a good yarn.

Dr. Anita Heiss, a proud member of the Wiradjuri Nation of Central New South Wales, is one of Australia’s most prolific and well-known authors, publishing across genres including non-fiction, historical fiction, women’s fiction, and children’s novels. She is a lifetime ambassador for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, a charity dedicated to lifting literacy levels in remote Indigenous communities, so all children across Australia have the same choices and opportunities.

To celebrate Indigenous Literacy Day 2020, Onkaparinga Libraries and Neporendi Aboriginal Forum Inc. will be joined by Anita via Zoom. She will talk about her children’s novels, her work with the Indigenous Literacy Foundation and how we can celebrate Indigenous Literacy Day to play a part in closing the literacy gap.

Asteroids named in honour of Indigenous Australians for significant contribution to Aboriginal astronomy

  • Five asteroids have been named after two Indigenous elders, two Indigenous academics and a Torres Strait Island community.
  • The asteroids were originally discovered in 1979 at the Siding Springs Observatory in NSW.
  • Torres Strait Islander culture is linked to the stars, which inform laws, customs and practices.
